About Me

About Teach Like a Pangolin

Who is Teach Like a Pangolin anyways? Ew. (If you get that Swiftie reference, we can definitely be best friends.) I'm Emily Upton, a former upper elementary teacher and ed-tech coach. I taught grades 3-5 for 9 years before stepping away from the classroom for a bit for my mental health.

My absolute favorite years of teaching were when I was in a self-contained 4th grade class for two reasons: cross-curricular connections and community building. When I saw the same kiddos all day for all subjects, I could really lean into my students' cross-curricular connections that they organically noticed throughout teh day! You'll find that many of my resources are cross-curricular, because I believe that helping students make those connections solidifies learning and makes the content more relevent to our students.

Community building was the absolute most important thing in my classroom. Social-emotional learning is my jam, and I love finding new ways to foster connections with my students. From a daily morning meeting focused on SEL to a weekly check-in to see how my kiddos were doing, I'm ALL about finding ways to sneak a little SEL into the school day without adding anything extra to your plate.

Now, I spend my time chasing my toddler and making resources that I wish I had in my classroom days. You can find me reading an Agatha Christie book and sipping a Cherry Coke when I'm not creating stuff to make your lessons just a little more awesome.

P.S. If you don't know that a pangolin in, they're neat little endangered animals that need our help. You can read more about them on National Geographic's website.
